Sitting on the fence

Snow in the East of England has turned the garden into a winter wonderland and scared the living daylights out of the hens!   Oh dear me, they do not like snow.   Well out of their comfort zone, probably not so much the cold (although I don't think Fanny's very keen), but just because it's white.

             "Who put that there?!"

Last night I felt so sorry for them that I tried to warm up their Eglu with two old stone hot-water bottles, but as usual, something new was a bit too much for this reactionary trio.   Fanny wouldn't go in at all, Madge went in, gingerly,  and Hilda got stuck in the entrance as Madge had turned round to come straight back out again.   So I opened the egg door and removed the bottles, which probably let even more cold air in.   I must learn not to interfere, I must learn not to interfere, I must learn not to interfere.    Nope, it's no good ..... one New Year's resolution I know I just can't keep.

Don't think I would be too keen to go out either if I was a hen. They look like lovely characters! Love the robin picture too.I really like reading your blog and wish you a very Merry Christmas.

Wonderful! My hens were very reluctant to venture out yesterday.

Ahhh - we must all learn your mantra. Pour little cluckers. But nature has a way of making things work out ...

Ha! Ha! I had just left a comment on someone else's blog re hens and snow.

We have NO snow but when we do get it, our hens take one look out of the pop-hole and wont come out........... they have to be "encouraged"................. :o)

I am the proud owner of a stone hot water bottle and never gave a thought as to how it might come in useful..... hmmmmmmmmmmm

What a great shot of the robin! Such a lot of snow you've had - we actually had sleety rain last night, I don't think we will match you. Our the roads are sheet ice though.
Hope your hens get used to it. bless them! :)

Lovely picture of a robin. One of my favourite birds, enjoy watching them at the bird table.

Beautiful robin piccie. Yes, the hens can be very fussy and wary of anything which upsets the status quo. Ah well, play them some cheery Christmas music and I'm sure they'll soon come dancing out!

Thanks for the snow. Its really refreshing. Its forecast to be 42 degrees Celsius here tomorrow. That's 107.6 Fahrenheit (not sure which system you have). So tell Fanny, Hilda and Madge how lucky they are not to be in Adelaide tomorrow.
