Ae Fond Kiss - for Valentine's Day

Ae fond kiss and then we sever;
Ae fareweel,  and then for ever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me;
Dark despair around benights me.

I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy,
Naething could resist my Nancy:
But to see her was to love her;
Love but her, and love for ever.

Had we never lov'd sae kindly,
Had we never lov'd sae blindly,
Never met - or never parted,
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

Fare-thee-weel, though first and fairest!
Fare-thee-weel, though best and dearest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Peace, Enjoyment, Love and Pleasure!

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!
Ae fareweel, alas, for ever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

Robert Burns  (1759-1796)

Listen to Eddi Reader singing this or (my preference) the Corries

I had a listen to the Corries but it's still Eddi Reader for me. But whoever is singing, it is just such a soulful song which tears at your heartstrings. Well done Robbie.

Chrissie,
I'm with Anne. I'm a great Eddi Reader lover and have just put the CD on to listen to this over and over. Thanks for reminding me of it on today of all days. Lesley

oh yes, love the teal colour, I love writing with the sewing machine. It reminds me of teaching handwriting and taking time to go up the letters and back down again. Eddi Reader for me.

Hi Chrissie, absolutely stunning post, what a beautiful song.....I am in luve with the lyrics and Eddie Reader does it sweet justice. Have a look at Phil Cunningham and Roseanne Cash on Youtube singing ' For the Roses..'something with roses in the title you will love it! I love your green felt heart and text....lovely post! xx

Lovely post! Its the Corries for me. Roy Williamson had the most beautiful voice. Used to be friendly with his daughter Karen. His singing in"Peggy Gordon" and "Loch Tay Boatsong" are still outstanding.
Thanks for reminding me!
